Abstract

Optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) is now commonly used for evaluating optical fiber loss characteristics. The most widely used approach to extend the dynamic range has been to increase pulse energy. This paper describes a new approach that uses Brillouin spectroscopy to evaluate optical fiber loss characteristics. We call it Brillouin optical fiber time domain analysis (BOTDA). BOTDA has a high dynamic range with low power lasers.
