Abstract

Nova, the powerful and sophisticated Nd: glass laser fusion irradiation facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory,1 has been actively doing experiments for more than 4 years. Nova's output is unsurpassed In flexibility providing experiments with a choice of wavelength, pulse duration, pulse shape, pulse format, and focused intensity. Power available to targets has exceeded 20 TW in a 1.0-ns pulse at 0.36 μm. Experiments from Nova have significantly advanced inertial confinement fusion (IGF) and laser-matter interaction physics. Accomplishments include the highest neutron yield of 2 × 1013 from a direct drive IGF target; thirtyfold radial convergence of an IGF target; density, confinement time, ion temperature products as great as 4 × 1014 cm−3 s keV; and advances is soft x-ray lasers.2
