Calculation of intensity modulation imposed on the input beam by self-focusing at the SBS threshold

Abstract

During recent studies of phase conjugation by stimulated Brillouin scattering in CS2, we observed small scale intensity modulation on the reflected beam. The modulation resembled beam breakup caused by self-focusing in early high power Nd:glass lasers. Substituting a medium with a lower nonlinear refractive Index for the CS2 eliminated the modulation. These observations suggest that the modulation was caused by self-focusing in CS2.
