Efficient blue light production via coherent anti-Stokes conversion in gases

Abstract

A well-known technique for tuning a laser beam to shorter wavelengths involves anti-Stokes shifting the beam by focusing it into a Raman-active medium. This technique has the advantage that even low power laser sources may be used since high intensities can be attained in a tightly focused spot. However, it has the disadvantages that the distribution of energy into the various anti-Stokes orders is not easily controlled, the energy efficiency into a given anti-Stokes order is low, and it is not scalable to arbitrarily high energies.
