Multlgigabit per second short optical pulse transmitter experiment

Abstract

Short optical pulses with a return-to-zero (RZ) format are required in high-bit-rate transmission and optical time domain multiplexing.1,2 Here we report the generation of high-speed repetitive and encoded pulse patterns based on picosecond optical pulses (POPs) with a RZ format. The technique relies on multiplexing and modulation of two repetitive POP trains obtained from a gain- switched laser diode. The purpose of experiment is threefold:
