Abstract

Our design approach for a high-gain laser amplifier system uses numerical methods to arrive at an optimized amplifier configuration. High-gain amplifiers must be segmented into isolated stages each with moderate gain to prevent energy loss caused by the amplification of spontaneous emission and by parasitic oscillations. An important design task is choosing the beam areas in the various amplifier stages to minimize the required pump energy while keeping the stage gain below a certain critical value.
