Operation of a P~BaB204 optical parametric oscillator is reported. In this initial demonstration, parametric oscillator output of 1 mJ was obtained using a pulsed 532~nrn3 10-niJ pump source. The threshold pump energy for oscillation was 3 m l p-BaB204 is a newly developed nonlinear optical, material1 that has good potential for nonlinear frequency conversion over its entire transmission range which extends from 0.19 to 3.5 |im. The high peak power and high average power capabilities and short wave length potential of this material are of particular interest. The tuning range observed here was 0.94 to 1.22 nm limited by the reflectivity of the oscillator mirrors. It is expected that the tuning range will be exteded to 0.63 - 3.5 Jim in further measurements with appropriate mirrors. A rotation of internal propagation direction from 15 to 21° will be required for the full tuning range as shown in Fig. 1.
