Abstract

Transient refractive-index (TRI) measurements have been made on electron-beam-pumped XeF laser gas mixtures as a function of the energy deposited in the gas. An interferometric technique was used in which a 1-m long electron beam was blocked by a thin perpendicular aluminum plate, which divided the cavity into pumped and unpumped regions. A 20-ns probe laser was collimated and passed through the cavity parallel to the blocking plate. A shearing interferometer compared the phases of the probe traversing the pumped and unpumped regions.
