Abstract
The factors limiting the efficiency of avalanche-discharge UV-preionized HgBr lasers, particularly in the short-pulse mode, have not yet been firmly established. Although some experimental diagnostics and extensive theoretical modeling of the HgBr laser have been performed, few quantitative measurements of the appropriate production and loss rates have been reported. We have conducted experiments permitting upper and lower laser level production and loss rates to be obtained in a variety of operating conditions.
