Abstract
Recently graded-index-rod external coupled cavity (GRECC) lasers1 have been directly modulated at 2 Gbit/s and employed successfully In a 1- Gbit/s-99-km fiber transmission experiment using direct detection,2 In addition, GRECC lasers are of much interest for future optical fiber communication systems because of their compactness and narrow linewidth. Here we have evaluated the potential of 1.3-μτη GRECC lasers in fiber communication systems employing heterodyne detection. We report (a) the cw llnewidth stability of a GRECC laser when its light was modulated by a Ti:LINb03 waveguide Intensity modulator, and (b) the heterodyning of two GRECC lasers. We also discuss the issues relevant to these experiments.
