Abstract
The Gekko XII glass laser has twelve beams and a maximum output energy of 30 kJ in 1 ns and a power of 50 TW in 100 ps for red beams (1.05-μm wavelength).1 Since the end of 1984, the laser has been frequency doubled. With this laser system, both direct- and indirect- (Cannonball) drive Implosion has been investigated. When using the red laser, a significant fraction of absorbed energy is transferred to the hot electrons which inevitably cause exploding pusher type implosion for thin wall targets.
