Abstract
Monolithic solid-state lasers consisting of small rods with directly applied end mirrors are highly efficient and coherent sources,1 Single-longitudinal mode operation at power levels above 1 mW has been difficult to obtain reproducibly,2 and this remains a major limitation in applications such as injection seeding and lidar. Pump-limited single-mode output has been obtained from a monolithic off-axis ring (MISER)3 but at the expense of considerable complexity in crystal fabrication and housing design. It has also been demonstrated that single-mode pulses can be obtained by gain switching a monolithic rod.2
