Abstract

The gain of a laser-pumped laser was calculated and compared with experimental results. Usually the most difficult quantity to calculate for a solid-state laser is the population inversion. However, by using longitudinal laser pumping, not only the population inversion but the population inversion density can be determined. From this, the gain for a Gaussian beam was calculated as a function of the ratio of the laser beam radius to the pump beam radius. The calculation can be performed exactly for two situations where the ratio of the beam radii approaches zero and where the ratio of the beam radii equals unity.
