Experimental investigations of copper laser kinetics

Abstract

The copper-vapor laser is the most efficient source of high-power visible laser light. A commercially available CVL of 40-W average power emits the laser wavelengths at 510.6 and 578.2 nm in 50-nsec long pulses at a repetition rate of 8 kHz. The high peak power coupled with the high average power makes these lasers of great interest for many photochemical applications, particularly the isotopic enrichment of uranium. Recently the analogous system in gold emitting at 628 nm has been successfully used as the light source in a photochemical treatment of cancer.
