The conventional free-electron laser (FEE) has excited interest because of its possible operation in the vacuum ultraviolet and soft x-ray regions of the spectrum. Unfortunately, the small signal gain when optimized does not improve with shorter wavelength and excessively long wigglers, and high currents are needed to obtain large gains.
