In this paper we report on the first ever investigation of high, power 249nm KrF laser produced plasmas. Such experiments are important not only for research related to laser fusion but also for the development of intense X-ray sources. Lasers have been shown to be efficient generators of X-ray sources with intensities several orders of magnitude higher than synchrotron sources in the region 0.1 KeV to 5KeV. However the lasers used to date have had low efficiency and operate at very low repetition rates. Excimer lasers offer the possibility of high energy, high efficiency and high repetition rate in addition to the increased X-ray efficiency expected for shorter wavelengths.
