Abstract

Preliminary results from an investigation of rf excitation of high-pressure CO2 lasers are reported. The goal is to demonstrate a cw laser which is frequency tunable between line centers. Continuous wave laser action at 3-atm pressure has been observed, and stable operation with 5-msec long pulses strongly indicates that cw operation at 7 atm can be obtained. With improved design of the laser it is probably possible to increase the pressure to ~10 atm, which is necessary for continuous tuning.
