Abstract

Coherent laser diode arrays have been realized by several workers (see, for example, Refs. 1-3). Generally, adjacent diodes tend to oscillate in antiphase. Here a multiple-waveguide device is described which would couple the power from the laser array into a single waveguide. The power would then be effectively focused into a single spot. This work is based on the theoretical and experimental demonstration that coupled waveguide systems can perform useful power combining and power transfer functions.4,5
