It has been suggested that the very fast relaxation of hydrogen halides proceeds by a vibration-to-rotation near-resonant transfer from V to V-1 at high J. This mechanism has also been invoked to provide population for the observed1 rotational lasing at high rotational levels adjacent to vibrational levels. We report direct observations of V-R transfer in HF using laser double resonance2 where a pulsed HF laser pumps populations to V = 1 and the arrival of populations in V = 0, J = 10-14 is monitored by adsorption with a cw laser. The time varying absorption signals were analyzed as successive reactions.
