Absorption of radiation from an interference pattern formed at the intersection of two laser beams can be used to create a thermal grating in a sample.1 In solvents having a temperature-dependent index of refraction, a volume-index grating results. The grating wave vector is given by K = 2π(sinϕ)/λe for excitation beams of wavelength λe and intersection angle 2ϕ.
