High-speed switching transients in directly modulated InGaAsP lasers

Abstract

Laser switching transients in the form of turnon and turnoff delays and finite rise and fall times limit the speed of high-bit-rate digital optical systems. The turnon delay can be reduced by adding a bias to the drive current so that the off-level is above threshold,1 with the constraint that the on-off ratio of the optical signal must be sufficiently large (~10) not to degrade system performance. Even if the off-level is above threshold, the turnon and turnoff delays are nonzero, and the rise and fall times are finite.
