Abstract
A major cause of technical difficulties and limitations in the operation of metal vapor lasers is the method by which the metal atoms are established within the laser discharge volume. Four methods are commonly used: direct vaporization of the metal (elemental system); dissociation of the molecules of a volatile compound of the metal (e.g., a metal halide) in a gas discharge; a transient arc between electrodes of the metal (SPER); or sputtering the metal atoms from a cathode.
