Abstract

We are using dc electron beams to excite cw ion lasers.1,2 An electron beam of energy between 1 and 5 keV, created with a glow discharge electron gun, can efficiently generate noble gas ions. The energy stored in the ions is subsequently deposited into the upper laser levels by thermal charge transfer reactions.
