Abstract

The well-defined geometry of a gaseous beam, the cooling that results from a supersonic expansion, and the relative simplicity of a pulsed nozzle are key advantages that could make a pulsed supersonic beam source more desirable than a gas cell in providing a medium for gas-phase nonlinear optical generation of radiation. Experiments have been performed to illustrate the utility of this source in third harmonic generation and four-wave mixing processes.
