Abstract
The spin degeneracy of the ground 3Σg state of molecular oxygen is split due to spin-spin and spin-rotational interactions. These spin splittings result in spectral splittings in both the rotational and vibrational Raman bands of the molecule.1 Pure- spin transitions between these levels have also been observed directly by both spontaneous Raman2 and microwave spectroscopies.3 However, until now, only microwave techniques have been able to re- solve the spin transitions arising from individual rotational levels.
