Efficient cw Raman amplification af InGaAsP laser light in silica fibers

Abstract

Direct amplification of laser diode (LD) light in a fiber is an attractive technology for wideband ultralong-distance optical transmission systems. Efficient pulsed amplification via four-photon parametric mixing1 in a silica fiber has recently been achieved in the 1.3-μm low-loss and low-dispersion wavelength region. However, cw amplification via four-photon mixing is complicated. This is because, for presently available cw pump power, long fibers satisfying the phase-matching condition, which are unrealizable at present, are required.
