Abstract

We have established a flexible and multipurpose manufacturing system by using a high-power CO2 laser starting in July 1982 in the Toshiba Mie works. This system consists of a CO2 laser, a two-axis beam scanner, and a numerical controller connected to a computer having a computer aided design system. This system has been used for manufacturing outer plates of middle size transformer cases. The cutting speed of steel of 12-, 6-, and 1-mm thicknesses is 0.8, 1.2, and 6.0 m/min, respectively. Line marking speed on the steel’s surface is ~10 m/min.
