Abstract
In the middle of the last decade the vibronic or phonon-assisted, transition-metal-doped solid-state laser, first demonstrated by L. F. Johnson et al. in 1963, again became a topic of active research. From this work came the alexandrite (Cr:BeAl2O4־) and Co:MgF2 lasers which produce tunable radiation in the 0.7-0.8- and 1.5-2.2-μm wavelength regions, respectively.
