Abstract

Optical correlation provides a sensitive transduction technique for detecting the minute deformation of a package exposed to changes in external pressure. The variation of this deformation with time is used to compute the leak rate of the package under test.1 As Fig. 1 shows, the wall of a sealed package deflects inward when exposed to a steep increase in pressure. If the package leaks, the gas in the chamber is forced into the package equilibrating the pressure inside the package with that of the test chamber.
