Abstract
Measurement of a blast-furnace burden profile has always been an important problem in blast-furnace operation. Knowledge of such a profile could make possible detection of irregularities in the descent of the burden. Both temporal and spatial irregularities can occur. For this reason, there have been numerous efforts in this field during the last decade. Three main methods have been tried using x-ray, acoustic beam, and microwave reflection from the burden surface. The industrial application of these methods has been difficult because of the unfavorable environment that exists at the throat of a blast furnace.
