Abstract

Extensive investigations of high Rydberg states of alkaline earth elements have been carried out in recent years using tunabe pulsed dye lasers. The primary aim of these investigations was the accurate determination of the level energies. The data were then analyzed and interpreted using multichannel quantum defect theory. However, due to the laser linewidth and Doppler-limited spectroscopic conditions, the experimental accuracy of these measurements was limited to typically ±0.1 cm−1. In addition, the accuracy was dependent on the availability of known reference transitions necessary to calibrate the spectra.
