We have built a high-speed electrooptic modulator for 10-μm wavelength from three cascaded CdTe crystals with dimensions of 0.8 × 0.8 × 35 mm3. 1Making up a total active length of 105 mm, they were embedded in a strip-line arrangement to form a traveling-wave modulator. Optically, the structure served as a light pipe.2 Velocity match between modulating rf and IR waves was achieved by careful selection of materials (BeO, Teflon) surrounding the GdTe crystals.
