Abstract

The major factor limiting long service life of fiber optic systems is the effect of moisture on strength. Conditions of strain and moisture reduce fracture strength. A hermetic coating will improve the fiber(1). We have developed and demonstrated our hermetic coating process(2)(3) which utilizes a noncontacting ion deposition technique to deposit Diamond-Like Carbon and also Indium films on optical fibers.
