Abstract
We report a study in the general field of active fibers, demonstrating the feasibility of remote amplification of light propagating as bound modes of a multimode fiber, by evanescent wave coupling. Experiments have been performed to show clearly light amplification by stimulated emission in a fiber with a passive core and an active cladding region. This same technique of coupling light into the fiber is also used to generate the active medium surrounding the fiber core.
