Abstract
Amplification in rare gas halide lasers is limited by the presence of nonsaturable loss within the media. Inclusion of nonsaturable loss in a two-level system with a bound tower state shows that for a pulse whose duration is shorter than the energy storage time rs of the medium, the maximum energy fluence, Emax (J/cm2), is approximately.
