Applications of lasers to combustion research

Abstract

An important challenge to all industries that burn hydrocarbon fuels is to gain a more complete understanding 0f the combustion of both present fuels and potential future fuels. This challenge is motivated by the need to increase the efficiency of a diverse variety of power plants subject to the constraints on the emissions from these power plants. Recent advances in laser technology now permit one to measure accurately and nonintrusively combustion properties such as temperature, species concentrations, fluid flow velocities, particle sizes and concentrations, as well as flame burning velocities. These quantities may be measured by laser-based optical methods such as absorption, fluorescence, Raman, coherent-Raman and photoacoustic spectroscopies, together with laser velocimetry, holography, or schlieren photography.
