Abstract

An optical, noninvasive method of measuring bowel pH was demonstrated on nine swine undergoing hemorrhagic shock and reperfusion. Using reflected near infrared light and partial least squares analysis it was possible to develop calibration models with mean accuracy better than 0.05 pH units. Continuous measurement of bowel pH was compared to blood flow in the superior mesenteric artery to investigate cellular response to ischemia and blood flow restoration to the bowel.
