Abstract
Fourier analysis was applied to the fluorescence spectra from normal, malignant and adipose (fat) breast tissues for the purpose of developing a spectroscopic diagnostic approach for detecting malignancy. The magnitude and phase of the first three harmonics were used successfully to distinguish malignant breast tissue samples from normal and adipose samples. A sensitivity of 0.95 was achieved when the results were compared with pathology.
