Abstract

Photoacoustic tomography combines the contrast advantage inherent in optical properties and the resolution advantage of ultrasound. Consequently, it overcomes both the resolution disadvantage of diffuse optical tomography and the contrast and speckle disadvantages of ultrasonography. In this invited talk, we will summarize our work in this area. We developed the rigorous reconstruction algorithms which are the foundation of this technology. We have also accomplished non-invasive transdermal and transcranial imaging of the structure and function of the rat brain in vivo. Imaged structures include the vasculature and lesions. Imaged functions include hemodynamic responses to whisker stimulation, hyperoxia, and hypoxia.
