Abstract

A clinical study that has involved more than 150 patients up to now is being performed to test the diagnostic potential of time-resolved transmittance imaging for the detection and characterization of breast lesions. The system routinely operates at 4 wavelengths (683, 785, 913, and 975 nm), thus being sensitive to oxy-, deoxyhemoglobin, water, and lipids. Using a modified instrument operating at 7 wavelengths, images of 43 patients were acquired also at 637 and 656 nm, and proved to offer increased contrast for the detection of malignant lesions.
