Laser-induced precipitation and dissolution of nanoparticles in glasses

Abstract

We report on laser-induced precipitation and dissolution of gold nanoparticles in glass. The gold ion doped glass is first irradiated by a focused infrared femtosecond laser, and the annealed at high temperature. Extinction spectra and TEM show that gold nanoparticles are precipitated in the irradiated area. The size of the gold nanoparticles decreases with increasing light intensity. The mechanism and promising application of the observed phenomena are discussed.
