Abnormal photosensitivity effects and the formation of type IA FBGs

Abstract

We report in detail the abnormal photosensitivity effects leading to the formation of a Type IA FBG. We show for the first time that the rate at which these gratings may be made is related to the intensity of the UV inscription laser and that it is possible to reduce the inscription time to a few minutes. We also report the first measurement of the reflection along the gratings’ length by means of a high resolution reflectometer. This measurement is used to confirm the first model of the refractive index profile for a Type IA FBG.
