High thermal conductivity and low quantum defect in Yb:CaGdAlO4, a new infrared laser material for high power applications

Abstract

Yb:CaGdAlO4 presents favorable thermo-mechanical properties. A laser oscillation at 1016 nm is demonstrated for the first time. This very small quantum defect (3.5%) results in weak heat released inside the crystal.
