Abstract

Industrial applications demand pulsed laser sources with high average power, high pulse power and good beam quality. Nd:YAG is the material of choice for this kind of laser source, but without special measures, thermally induced birefringence prevents a high beam quality at high average power. A Nd:YAG MOPA combining rod and slab laser geometry has been developed. An improved birefringence compensation scheme guarantees a good beam quality, a high mode overlap and low power densities on the optical surfaces. At 10 kHz repetition rate the MOPA delivers 1.3 kW average, 24 MW peak power and 5.4 ns pulse duration.
