Spectroscopic and laser characterization of Cr2+:ZnSe/ZnS under visible excitation into the charge transfer band of Cr2+ is reported. The pump rates of Cr:ZnSe/ZnS via ionization transition are sufficient for realization of population inversion and lasing.
