Abstract

The components in electronics and medical devices are getting smaller and smaller. Last few years have seen dramatic rise in the performance and usage of electronic devices such as smart phones and tablets. Similarly performance and usage of drug delivery and implantable devices, such as stent, have increased rapidly. Such increase in usage and performance improvement in devices requires miniaturization and precise manufacturing of components at a lower cost for further expansion of markets. Laser is playing a very important role in both industries by providing necessary technology and processes that enables manufacturers in achieving these goals. High power, high repetition rate, short pulse width lasers provide an opportunity to implement a cost effective high quality, high speed micromachining process in a 24/7 manufacturing environment. Specific examples of use of nanosecond (ns) and femtosecond (fs) pulse width lasers enabling electronics and medical device manufacturing will be illustrated.
