Abstract

Thermal birefringence effect in Nd3+-doped YAG ceramics has been investigated. The amount of depolarization induced by thermal birefringence is nearly the same between ceramics and single crystals at the same Nd3+ concentration, whereas it becomes larger for the samples with higher Nd3+ concentrations even at the same absorbed pump power. This is mainly attributed to the fact that the fractional thermal loading increases as Nd3+ concentration becomes higher.
