Abstract

We have shown that the spectral ranges of Yb3+ emission and Nd3+ emission can overlap around 1 µm in phosphate apatite crystals with large lattice parameters. The Yb:Ba5(PO4)3F and Nd:Ba5(PO4)3Cl laser crystals of good optical quality have been grown and spectroscopically characterized. The wavelength of the 4F3/24I11/2 Nd3+ laser emission in Ba5(PO4)3Cl was shown to be shorter than that of 2F5/22F7/2 emission in Yb:Ba5(PO4)3F. This implies the possibility of the overlap of Nd and Yb emission lines in mixed apatite crystals. The cw 1053.8 nm laser emission with the slope efficiency equal to 25% has been demonstrated in Nd: Ba5(PO4)3Cl.
