Abstract

The maximum pump-power range for stable fundamentalmode operation of longitudinally pumped solid-state lasers depends only on material constants. The stability range was increased by developing a versatile and scale-able end-pumped high-power multi-Nd:YAG-rod laser resonator that exploits the enhanced stability of ring cavities. The stability properties of this variable-configuration resonator (VCR) led to the opportunity for a novel Q-switching technique.
