Abstract
Oscillator beam parameters strongly affect diffraction losses, extraction efficiency, and output beam quality of high peak power multipass amplifiers via linear and nonlinear effects in the amplifier crystal. We discuss a method which can be used to optimize the output power and beam quality of a slab amplifier by using measurements of the propagation of a test mode to specify constraints on the oscillator mode parameters and the focal power of the beam folding optics.
